If you've been using Photoshop for a while, you may recall back in Photoshop 6 when there was an actual Airbrush tool. That changed as of Photoshop 7 when the tool itself became nothing more than an airbrush option in the Options Bar when you have a brush selected:

You can always click on the option in the Options Bar to select it, but that's kind of a pain. The easier way to turn it on and off on the fly as you're painting is to use the keyboard shortcut Shift+Alt+P (Win) / Shift+Option+P (Mac).
Now you can turn the airbrush on and off whenever you like.
